How Bismuth Crystals Form

Melting the Metal
Raw bismuth (a metal) is heated to about 520°F (271°C) until it becomes fully liquid. -
Controlled Cooling
As the molten bismuth begins to cool, the outer layer solidifies first. The inside remains liquid a bit longer. -
Crystal Growth
When the remaining liquid is poured off, it leaves behind hollow, stepped structures. These form in a hopper crystal pattern—that signature stair-step look. -
Iridescent Colors
The rainbow colors aren’t from dyes. They come from a thin oxide layer that forms when the hot metal reacts with oxygen in the air.- Different thicknesses of this layer = different colors (like oil on water)
